Utilisome

Digesting food is hard work, so we sometimes need a hand. The Bacteroidites microbes in our intestines are able to help us digest long sugar chains called glycans.

This AMI-award winning animation for the Ranson and Van Den Berg laboratories uses detailed structural biology data to explain how a specific outer-membrane protein complex in Bacteroidites, called the Utilisome, is able to cut and import these long glycan chains.
